I study

According to a study, a link has emerged between excessive intake of multivitamin supplements and the overall risk of developing certain cancers.

The researchers looked at 489,640 subjects between the ages of 50 and 71 on the NIH AARP Diet and Health Studyan American association that studies the health and lifestyle of retirees for cancer prevention.

The main cancers present in state registries and some factors such as age, body weight, smoking, physical activity and the use of multivitamin supplements were also considered.

It was found that the highest risk of developing cancers was higher in men who took one or more multivitamins per day, compared with those who did not.

Among the cancers, the greatest risks were related to prostate cancer, colon and leukemia. For women, however, the greatest risk is represented by colon and oropharyngeal cancer.

The most “harmful” supplements

Research by the Cochrane Association published in 2018 looked at an essential mineral called selenium to see if it selenium supplements they could reduce the risk of cancer.

After reviewing all the information, it was found that selenium did not reduce the risk of cancer. Indeed, there was a higher incidence of prostate cancer and type 2 diabetes.

Another study found an excess of beta-carotene supplements may increase the risk of developing lung and stomach cancer.

Specifically, about 29,000 male smokers were analyzed and by isolating a group that had been taking 20 mg of beta-carotene per day for about 5-8 years, an 18% increase in lung cancer emerged.
