Capitals renounce Aussie striker Nathan Walker as Center Travis Boyd returns from injury

The Washington Capitals have put the Australian striker Nathan Walker to the waivers. Should he be clear on Monday afternoon, he will be assigned to the team's American Hockey League affiliate. The move will allow the Capitals to eliminate the center of Travis Boyd from the long-term injury after suffering a left foot injury that blocked a shot in the preseason.

Boyd played in two qualifying games with the AHL Hershey Bears this weekend, but returned to Washington on Sunday. Walker has appeared in just three NHL games this season. When sent to Hershey, the capitals can clear the necessary salary caps to activate Boyd. It's unclear whether Boyd will face the Edmonton Oilers on Monday night while Washington tries to make a two-game defeat.

Walker was challenged a year ago by Edmonton from the waivers, but then the Oilers had waived him three weeks later, and the Capitals could buy him again. When Boyd was about to return, Washington seemed to have the choice to part with Walker and striker Dmitrij Jaskin, who capitulated before the season of disclaimers. The team seemed to be giving the 25-year-old Czechs the opportunity to complain on Saturday night when coach Todd Reirden brought Jaskin into the third line against Dallas. He ran 15:02 and counted a head assistant, and his game was a ray of hope with a 4-3 overtime loss.

"I especially liked Jaskins game tonight, got him several times to different points of the game," said Reirden after the game.

The capitals also reassigned defender Aaron Ness on Sunday, which could be a positive sign of Brooks Orpik's health. The 38-year-old Blueliner missed the last two games with an unknown "lower body injury", and Ness had been appointed to an additional player during the torments of Orpik. Orpik has not been training with the team for a week, so it is doubtful that he will play against Edmonton on Monday.
