Localized fat is that specific area of the body where there is a storage of adipose tissue. There are many methods and treatments that promise to reduce these areas, from exercises to massages, but do they really work? Dr. Carlos Jaramillo answers this question in this episode of Educating with Science.
Exercise and localized fat loss
One of the methods that promises to reduce areas of localized fat are exercises that focus on those specific areas, for example, crunches and twists to reduce the abdomen. However, a study by the American Association for Health, Physical Education and Recreation concluded that the activity of a specific muscle does not necessarily cause the loss of fat from that area. In other words, doing ten sit-ups a day does not necessarily imply that you will reduce abdominal fat.
It should be noted that this does not imply that exercise is not useful when it comes to reducing fat in a general way in the body. In physical activity, the body uses energy reserves to supply the caloric expenditure that is made, which is why it is recommended to exercise on an empty stomach if you want to burn fat more efficiently.
This is because exercising is burning energy, and doing so after a sleep fast forces the body to draw on energy reserves stored in the tissues. On the other hand, doing so after eating expends newly acquired energy and as a result energy reserves (fats) remain intact.
