The knockout stages of the UEFA Champions League continued on Wednesday with Real Madrid beating Ajax and Tottenham beating Borussia Dortmund. A total of six goals were scored between the two games, with an away team was thrilled by their result and a home team for the quarterfinals was blocked.

Real Madrid scored goals from Karim Benzema and Marco Asensio, who were victorious in Amsterdam 2-1. This allowed the reigning champions to return to Spain with two big away goals. Real could lose the second leg 1-0 and still get ahead.

At Wembley, Tottenham lost two of their best players in Harry Kane and Dele Alli, but still looked after Borussia Dortmund 3-0 to score two goals in the last ten minutes. Heung-min Son, Jan Vertonghen and Fernanrdo Llorente were the scorers for Spurs. Here are three takeaways from Wednesday's action.

Holy spurs Who saw this coming?

Without Kane and Alli Spurs could still achieve results in the Premier League. But the UCL is another animal, and against the leaders of the Bundesliga proved to be difficult. However, they made it look easy and scored all three goals in the second half. In the league against Hoffenheim Dortmund came with a 3-0 lead, and the defense strengthened where it left off. Spurs had 15 strokes, five of them in a convincing performance.

The opener of Son had a brilliant graduation, Vertonghen got the assist.

Then it was the defender's turn to score and put down a nice ball from Serge Aurier:

Without Kane and Alli, Logic said it would be hard for this team to constantly threaten. But they did just that and scored a surprising number of points to get them off to a good start into the second leg.

Dortmund fell asleep in the second half

On the road, Dortmund knew that there would be a goal to feel good, because he had a chance to come back. Hugo Lloris made some fine saves to refuse them. Dortmund not. Llorent's goal in the final minutes could have been easily avoided, but two defenders misunderstanding Christian Eriksen's corner and found the head of the Spanish striker right in front of the goal. Look here:

Not exactly what you would find in a book about defense. Only poor execution of the visitors and now they have a deficit that is almost impossible to overcome.

Advantage Real Madrid

Boy, these are a few street warriors. After beating rivals Barcelona and the Copa del Rey semi-finals draw, Los Blancos went through the Spanish capital to dominate Atletico Madrid 3-1 last weekend. And best of all, they go to Amsterdam against a truly talented young Ajax team and get a result that makes them feel very comfortable with their advancement opportunities. Two away goals give them a bit of room to breathe as they know they can probably score at home. This team is now playing with so much confidence and is now a threat in every competition. A few months ago, this team did not seem to have a chance to win.

Part of the resurgence is due to the fact that Vinicius Junior became a star so quickly and Karim Benzema showed one of the best forms of his career. For the opener, they combined a fantastic combination. The Brazilian speed and vision made the French striker a great success:

Real now moves to Tottenham as a strong favorite to enter the quarter-finals after these well-deserved results from the first leg. The teams will meet again on 5 March for their respective second legs. Both games are available on fuboTV (Try for free).
