Chelsea fans look the other way! Does Romelu Lukaku’s Inter Milan shirt number cast a shadow over the Blues?

Inter’s decision to hand Romelu Lukaku the new loan signing’s No.90 shirt has left Chelsea fans licking their wounds.

The 29-year-old striker completed his £6.9m loan spell at San Siro on Wednesday, less than 12 months after leaving Chelsea for £97.5m last summer.

Lukaku made no secret of his desire to reunite with the Italian giants in a controversial interview with Sky Italy in December and revealed on Thursday that his return was “like coming home.”

Inter have announced that Lukaku will wear the less worn No 90 shirt next season, which has sparked a lot of reactions among Chelsea supporters on social media.

According to several Blues fans, the number was chosen to represent the net gain Inter received by offloading and re-signing the Belgium international in less than a year.

Although a handful of rival supporters could see the funny side, Chelsea fans took to social media to lament Lukaku’s parting shot.

One fan said: ‘Inter and Lukaku screwed us up in a monumental way’. Now the number 90 shirt too to blow our minds.

“I’ve never been so ashamed of a deal.”

“It’s time to cut his name,” said another Blues fan, keen to forget his club parted ways with almost £100m for the transfer flop.

However, an alleged Arsenal fan took the opportunity to poke fun at their London rivals.

‘Lukaku wearing the 90 shirt as a symbol of how many millions Chelsea lost in the deal. Quality banter,” they remarked.

The Belgian star scored 64 goals in 95 games for the Italian club under former manager Antonio Conte and helped win the Serie A title in 2020-21.

Since taking on a new challenge at Stamford Bridge, Lukaku has struggled to deliver a comparable goalscoring tally, scoring just eight goals in 26 Premier League appearances last campaign.
