Chelsea Manning: “People don’t want to live in cages, disconnected”

Ehe Tenerife Auditorium hosted the Alan Turing LGTBIQ+ Awards gala on the night of this Thursday, June 16, in which more than a thousand attendees were able to enjoy the awards ceremony that were born within the framework of the Culture & Business Pride with the aim of recognizing figures from the LGTBIQ+ collective who have fought for the rights and visibility of all human beings regardless of gender or condition.

The introduction of the night came with a very crowded red carpet, between admirers and the media, along which the personalities and winners of this fifth edition paraded. This 2022 event was presented by Cayetana Guillén Cuervo and Boris Izaguirre and was attended by Chelsea Manning and Pussy Riot, among others, in addition to Ángel Víctor Torres, president of the Government of the Canary Islands, Pedro Martín, president of the Cabildo de Tenerife, and José Manuel Bermúdez, mayor of Santa Cruz de Tenerife.

Culture and Business Pride is sponsored by the Cabildo de Tenerife through Turismo de Tenerife, the Autonomous Organization for Culture (OAC) and the Organism for Festivities and Recreational Activities of the Santa Cruz de Tenerife City Council, and Promotur Turismo of the Government of the Canary Islands.

The journalist from El Mundo, Javier Cid, was in charge of offering the welcome speech. The first winner to collect his award, in this case in the Colors category, was Rain Dove, an American model, actor and activist, best known for his work in a subversive way, as a gender non-conforming model, alternately presenting himself as a man and women in photo sessions, productions and catwalks.

Next would be the turn of the Polish politician Robert Biedron, winner of the Special Prize for his social and institutional work in campaigns against homophobia. He received the award from Juan Fernando López Aguilar. The third winner of the night was Felipe Cárdenas, who received the International Organization Award, presented by Eduardo López Collazo.

The People Award, presented by the journalist Javier Cid, went this year to Owen Jones, a British commentator, columnist and writer, one of the most influential authors within the left-wing movement in the United Kingdom. The Councilor for Culture of the Santa Cruz City Council, Gladis de León, was in charge of presenting the Icon Award to Conchita Wurst.

This 2022, the Art Award went to Gilbert & George, who could not be at the Gala but did show their gratitude to the organization and all the attendees through a video greeting. The island director of Tourism, Laura Castro, and the CEO of Tenerife Tourism, David Pérez, were in charge of delivering the Commitment award, collected by Miguel Sanz on behalf of TurEspaña.

The next to take the stage was Saúl Castro, representing Amnesty International, distinguished with the Social Organization Award, which was presented by the mayor of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, José Manuel Bermúdez. One of the highlights of the ceremony was the delivery of the Spirit Award, by Pedro Martín, president of the Cabildo de Tenerife, to the Russian singers and activists Pussy Riot.

The last award of the night, under the name of Life Prize, was delivered by the President of the Government of the Canary Islands, Ángel Víctor Torres, and went to the figure of Chelsea Manning, a former US Army analyst and currently an LGTBI activist after spending seven years in an American prison. In her intervention, Manning highlighted the need for people to stay connected, connected: “What happens in a prison is that people lose connection with their friends. And people don’t want to live in cages, disconnected.” The ceremony concluded with the closing of the gala by Cayetana Guillén Cuervo and Boris Izaguirre and the live performance of the singer Conchita Wurst.
