This week, a group of 24 scientists signed an open letter in which they question the WHO’s conclusions and claim that it is not possible to rule out that SARS-CoV-2 escaped from a laboratory.

The issue of the origin of covid-19 is being politicized by countries like the US, said the spokesman for the Chinese Foreign Ministry, Zhao Lijian, on Thursday, commenting on an open letter from 24 scientists on this matter published a day earlier.

“They insist on politicizing the issue of origin tracing, undermining and disrupting cooperation between China and WHO, attacking and smearing China, and openly challenging independent and scientific research by scientists,” the spokesperson was quoted as saying by Xinhua.

The letter, whose writing was led by Jamie Metzl, a member of the American think tank Atlantic Council, criticizes the joint investigation of the WHO and China on the origin of the virus and maintains that the hypothesis of a laboratory leak should not be ruled out. “His starting point was ‘let’s have as much commitment as necessary to obtain minimal cooperation from China,'” Metzl said, referring to WHO experts who participated in the investigation, Reuters reports.

The letter released Wednesday is signed by scientists from the US, Europe, Japan and Australia. This is almost the same group that published another open letter on the same topic on March 4, before the conclusions of the WHO investigation were made public, so Zhao considers that it was an attempt to pressure the organization. .
