China lottery sales up 5.7% in August

BEIJING, Oct. 3 (Xinhua) — Lottery ticket sales in China reached 34.48 billion yuan (4.86 billion U.S. dollars) in August, up 5.7 percent year on year, data from the Ministry of Finance showed.

Sales of lottery tickets to support the welfare system stood at 12.67 billion yuan, up 10.7 percent from the same month last year.

Lottery tickets sold to support the sports industry rose 3.1 percent year on year to 21.81 billion yuan.

During the first eight months of the year, nationwide lottery ticket sales totaled 247.91 billion yuan, up 0.2 percent year on year, according to the figures.

Under China’s lottery management rules, the funds raised from ticket sales are used for administrative expenses, public welfare projects and the financing of prizes.
