PHNOM PENH – China’s Ministry of Defense (Kemhan) considers Washington to bear full responsibility for the current decline in United States (US)-China relations.

China’s Ministry of Defense claims the US leadership bases its policy towards Beijing on wrong judgment.

Speaking to state broadcaster CCTV on Tuesday (22/11/2022), Chinese Defense Ministry spokesman Tan Kefei accused Washington of making a strategic judgment error. He said China was not to blame for the current bilateral difficulties.

The same day, Chinese Defense Minister Wei Fenghe told his US counterpart, Defense Minister Lloyd Austin that Beijing views Taiwan as one of its top interests, and a red line.

“Taiwan’s resolution is a matter for the Chinese people, no external force has the right to interfere,” Wei said during his meeting with Austin in Cambodia.

He also expressed hope that Washington would respect Beijing’s national interests and adopt a more rational approach towards China, something that could reverse the negative trend in bilateral relations.

Over the past few years, successive US administrations have grown increasingly critical of China, with Washington now openly branding it a strategic enemy.

Tensions spiked sharply in early August, when US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi visited Taiwan, which China regards as part of its territory seized by separatists.

Angered by Washington’s failure to heed its warnings, Beijing carried out massive military drills in the Taiwan Strait in the following days.
