From the 2023 Oscar nominations were announced, a complex debate has erupted over Andrea Riseborough’s best actress nomination for her performance in the independent drama a leslie. After the actress was nominated, to the audible surprise of many who attended the event, the Academy announced a “review” of the campaign procedures surrounding this year’s nominees. An Academy decision that yellow jackets cast member Christina Ricci has attacked with a brutally honest condemnation.

The Academy said it would review campaign procedures around this year’s nominees to ensure “the awards competition is conducted fairly and ethically.” While Andrea Riseborough and a leslie it was not explicitly mentioned, many read between the lines. In an Instagram comment (via Independent), the Wednesday alum he noted how the Academy’s decision felt “elitist” and an attempt to disqualify films that don’t have enough money to aggressively campaign. The actress wrote:

It seems hilarious that the ‘surprise nomination’ (meaning tons of money weren’t spent to position this actress) for a legitimately brilliant performance is being investigated. So only movies and actors who can afford campaigns deserve recognition? It feels elitist and exclusive and, frankly, way behind the times for me. And I’m sure she had nothing to do with the campaign. These things are not controlled or decided by the actors themselves, and yet now her nomination will be tainted by this, and if it is taken away, shame on them.
