In the evening of Friday, November 22, at the foot of Strasbourg Cathedral, the joy of Christmas comes to life. Around the chalets and in the streets adorned with holiday decorations, visitors flock to enjoy the early hours of this secular market. "It's a bit special as a context this year", says a passer-by. Particularly, because in these same streets, in 2018, Strasbourg was touched in the heart by a terrorist attack which made five dead and eleven wounded. A year later, the city was placed under high security. 750 men and women security forces and rescue were mobilized.
The city center is closed, bridges are blocked, and systematic digs are made at the entrance to the market. Consequence: the queues are getting longer. But obviously, the device reassures: there is 85% of filling in hotels for the first weekend, and the atmosphere is at the party. Every year, the Christmas market in Strasbourg welcomes more than two million visitors.
