Cinnamon offers the best protection for your heart

Can a spice protect the heart?

Our diet plays a big role in the health of our heart. Researchers claim that when people eat a certain spice, in addition to a healthy and balanced diet, which is also available as a dietary supplement, this leads to a number of important cardiovascular benefits.

A study by Victor Babes University of Medicine and Pharmacy found that taking cinnamon as a nutritional supplement protects heart health. The results of the Romanian study were published in the English journal "Journal of Clinical Lipidology".

Healthy food for the protection of the heart

The heart is responsible for pumping our blood through the body, providing oxygen and nutrients, and removing waste. One of the best ways to promote heart health is to eat a healthy, balanced diet. This should at best include at least five servings of fruits and vegetables per day, fibrous foods such as potatoes, bread, rice or pasta and dairy products, protein and unsaturated oils. Although it is important that you eat foods that fall under all of these food groups, it has also been found that certain foods specifically improve heart health.

Cinnamon reduces triglycerides and cholesterol

Cinnamon can reduce so-called triglycerides, a type of fat found in our blood that can increase the risk of developing coronary heart disease, the study authors report. In addition, cinnamon can also lower total cholesterol. Cholesterol is a fat that is essential for normal body function. However, too much cholesterol can increase the risk of heart attack.

Cinnamon has been used in ancient Egypt

Cinnamon comes from the bark of certain trees. The spice was already a popular cooking ingredient in the past, whose use comes from ancient Egypt. In the past, cinnamon was almost as much revered for its health properties as it was for its pronounced aroma and taste. Traditionally it has been used as a breath freshener because of its antibacterial effect. Cinnamon is now available in the form of sticks, milled or as an extract in capsules, tea and essential oils.

Pregnant women and children should not take cinnamon

The intake of cinnamon preparations should be avoided if you are pregnant. Even children should not take dietary supplements with cinnamon. You should also refrain from cinnamon if you need to take medicines that can affect the liver, such as acetaminophen or statins. In that case, you should use alternatives to protect your heart. Three other nutritional supplements that have been shown to improve heart health are magnesium, calcium and silica. (As)
