Congress of Guerrero decriminalizes abortion up to the 12th week of pregnancy

With 30 votes in favor, 13 against and one abstention, the Congress of the state of Guerrero approved this Tuesday the reform to the Penal Code to decriminalize the abortion in the entity; The debate lasted more than an hour and the vote was held at 5:20 p.m.

The discussion gave a favorable result to the initiative sent by the Justice Commission of the Legislative Power; After the second reading was dispersed, the debate began in which legislators from the National Action (PAN) and Institutional Revolutionary (PRI) parties spoke out against it.

The political parties that established their position in favor of the decriminalization of abortion were:

  • Party of the Democratic Revolution (PRD)
  • National Regeneration Movement (Morena)

Starting at 9:00 a.m. this Tuesday, pro-life groups (against the abortion) and feminists (in favor of abortion) met outside the Congress from Guerreroand the last were those who celebrated the decriminalization until the 12th week of pregnancy.

In a press release released on social networks, the legislative chamber clarified that the decision “does not intend to promote the abortionbut full exercise of rights and free will of women” in Guerreroaspects that the Congress local “is obliged to guarantee”.
