Beijing / Boston Chinese researchers have launched a possible corona vaccine for the first time in the world to trigger a reaction in the immune system in humans. However, there was a setback for the malaria drugs chloroquine and hydroxychloroquine. A large analysis of the data from corona patients showed no success.
The Ad5-nCoV vaccine, which was tested in China, was found to be safe and well tolerated in an initial trial phase, the researchers write in the journal “The Lancet” on Friday. Above all, however, he generated an immune response to the Sars-CoV-2 virus in the human body. Further trials are needed to find out whether this reaction also prevents infection with the virus.
“These results represent an important milestone,” said lead author Wei Chen from the Beijing Institute of Biotechnology. A single dose of Ad5-nCoV is therefore sufficient to generate virus-specific, neutralizing antibodies and a corresponding reaction of special defense cells (T cells) in the test subjects in 14 days.
He advised that the results be interpreted “carefully”. A vaccine that is available to everyone is still far away. Ad5-nCoV was administered to 108 healthy volunteers in Wuhan, China. According to “Lancet”, more than 100 possible corona vaccines are currently under development worldwide.
A comprehensive data analysis by researchers from the United States and Switzerland confirms that the malaria drugs chloroquine and hydroxychloroquine are probably not suitable for the treatment of covid-19. On the contrary, the active ingredients may increase the death rate and lead to more arrhythmias, the researchers report in the journal “The Lancet”.
They had evaluated data from a good 96,000 patients from hundreds of clinics, almost 15,000 of whom had received one of the agents alone or in combination with an antibiotic. The authors led by Mandeep Mehra from Harvard Medical School advocate using the funds only in clinical studies and carefully checking them. Smaller studies had previously reached similar results.
US President Donald Trump claims to take the malaria drug as a corona prophylaxis. He’s been taking hydroxychloroquine for about a week and a half, Trump said at the White House earlier this week. He had heard “very good things” about the long-approved malaria preparation, Trump said.
Virus detected in breast milk
Virologists from Ulm have detected the new coronavirus for the first time in the breast milk of a woman suffering from Covid-19. The team headed by Jan Münch and Rüdiger Groß from the University of Ulm also announced that their baby had contracted the virus. The researchers emphasize that it is still unknown whether the viruses in milk are also infectious and whether they can be passed on to babies through breastfeeding. They also published the study in the journal “The Lancet”.
The virologists had examined the breast milk of two women for the genetic material of the new coronavirus, who shared a room with their newborns after the delivery in the hospital. When one of the women developed symptoms of the disease, she was isolated with her newborn and both tested positive for Sars-CoV-2. The neighbor noticed symptoms later and was then – like her child – also tested positive.
The scientists found no evidence of the new coronavirus in the breast milk samples of the woman who was ill first. The result in the samples from the second mother, however, was positive four times. After 14 days, no virus was detectable in breast milk and the mother and her child recovered from Covid-19.
The World Health Organization (WHO) has so far had no evidence of the new coronavirus in breast milk. “There is no reason to avoid or stop breastfeeding,” says the recommendations on the organization’s homepage.
Doctors at the Augsburg University Clinic have consistently found “unusually severe, sometimes presumably irreversible” damage to the lung tissue during the post-mortem examination of corona patients. The university clinic said on Friday that they were apparently not caused directly by ventilation, but rather directly by the virus. The medical team sees the change as the cause of death.
The results of her first ten autopsies are described in the “Journal of the American Medical Association” (“Jama”). “All patients suffered from serious underlying diseases, which did not lead directly to death,” said Professor Bruno Märkl, director of pathology at the university hospital. No apparently serious changes were found in the other organs.
