The coronavirus has caused the first cancellations of cultural activity in the province with the suspension of three concerts which were scheduled this week at ADDA, the Teatro Principal de Alicante and Casa Mediterráneo.
The first of the suspended performances is the arrival of the RAI Symphony Orchestra, from Turin, which was scheduled for this Thursday at the ADDA.
The training directed by James Conlon, who was going to perform, among other works, Symphony No. 1 (Titan), de Mahler, communicated last week to the Alicante audience the postponement of his tour of Spain “due to his origin in an area considered the European focus of the COVID-19 coronavirus” such as the capital of Piedmont, in northern Italy.
The tour began on the 11th in Madrid, and continued on the 12th in Alicante, the 13th in Murcia, the 14th in Oviedo and the 15th in San Sebastián.
The audience and the orchestra are trying to set another date later to resume the calendar, which will be communicated through the ADDA website in the next few days, just as cancellation has been notified by this means. “With the intention of protecting our audiences as much as possible, we will continue to be very vigilant and will inform them shortly of the date of the replacement,” reports the website.
The same tickets purchased for the next fixed date will be valid and, in any case, the amount may be returned to whoever wishes.
The next international concert of the symphony season at the ADDA is next April 1 by the Mariinsky Theater orchestra, conducted by Valery Gergiev, from Saint Petersburg, Russia, who does not seem affected by these circumstances at the moment. Before, on March 20, ADDA Simfònica will perform “Pastoral”.
The next act suspended in Alicante is the concert scheduled for this Friday, the 13th, at Casa Mediterráneo by the singer of Algerian origin based in Barcelona Neila Benbey, together with the Norwegian musician Havard Enstad.
This musical performance, scheduled on the occasion of Women’s Day, is suspended for prevention, since Benbey is quarantined for prevention in the event of a possible contagion in their environment, as indicated by the institution. This recital was open to the public, with no entry required.
Also the Principal Theater of Alicante will be forced to cancel the first performance of the new season next Sunday, March 15, with the suspension of the concert of Montserrat Martí and the Boys of the Choir, Remembering Montserrat Caballé. On this occasion, the cancellation of the program is due to the impossibility of the children, members of the choral group making trips outside of France and the first of the recitals was to be held on the 13th in Toledo.
Casualties have also begun to occur in other spheres of culture in the rest of Spain. The National Institute of Performing Arts and Music (Inaem) yesterday confirmed the cancellation of the performances of The Revenger’s Tragedy, a production of the Piccolo Teatro di Milano, which were scheduled at the National Dramatic Center in Madrid from 11 to 14 March, “taking into account the provenance of the Milan company, one of the areas of the world in which the transmission of the virus has been verified,” the statement said.
Internationally, bands like Green Day, BTS or the singer Avril Lavigne have canceled their tours of Asia and yesterday Madonna herself canceled the last two dates scheduled in Paris for today and tomorrow due to the coronavirus.
