After Canada, the USA has also approved the corona vaccine from BioNTech / Pfizer for children and adolescents from the age of twelve. FDA chief Woodcock spoke of a “significant step”.

The U.S. Medicines Agency has approved Pfizer and Biontech’s corona vaccine for children between the ages of twelve and 15. The vaccinations in this age group could begin as soon as an advisory committee at the federal level, comparable to the Standing Vaccination Commission in Germany, recommends this, which is expected on Wednesday.

So far, the use of the vaccine from the German company and its US partner has been recommended in most countries from the age of 16. Canada recently became the first to extend the recommendation to children aged twelve and over.

FDA chief: “Significant step”

The emergency approval granted in December for the Biontech Pfizer vaccine, which was valid for people aged 16 and over, has been expanded accordingly. This is a “significant step in the fight against the Covid-19 pandemic,” said FDA executive Janet Woodcock. “Today’s move allows a younger population to be protected against Covid-19, bringing us closer to a return to a sense of normalcy and an end to the pandemic.”

The US Food and Drug Administration examined the effectiveness of the vaccine in 2,000 adolescents between the ages of twelve and 15. No infections with the coronavirus were registered in the fully vaccinated volunteers, while there were 18 infections in a placebo group.

EMA is also checking approval

The adolescents received the same dose as adults and reported the same side effects: slight pain at the injection site, fever and headache. Pfizer and Biontech have already applied for approval of their vaccine for adolescents aged twelve and over in the European Union.

The EU Medicines Agency is also currently reviewing the approval of the corona vaccine for this age group. The goal is definitely a decision in June. EMA boss Emer Cooke told a number of European newspapers, including the “Handelsblatt”, that attempts were being made to accelerate approval and bring it forward to the end of May.
