Cost and Real Consumption: Lexus NX 450h+ F Sport

For a long time, Toyota and Lexus saw no reason to deviate from their course. To put it succinctly, that meant that hybrids and hydrogen were the future, while e-cars and plug-in hybrids were a mistake. But the customer, the stubborn being, likes to buy plug-in hybrids – the sales figures show it. Because in addition to the peace of mind that comes with the dense network of gas stations, there is also a tax advantage when purchasing and owning a company car.

So plug-in hybrid now in the NX, which comes along very pointedly and with its gigantic grille makes other SUVs look tame. Oh yes: the plug hybrid is not just any Lexus, but the top version with all-wheel drive, while there is the pure hybrid 350h as 2WD and 4WD with a maximum of 179 kW (244 hp) system performance. The tested 450h+ achieves 227 kW (309 hp). And what about the fuel, electricity and maintenance costs?

Hans Dieter Seufert

Our test consumption

Lexus gives for the NX 450h+ F Sport a WLTP consumption of 0.9 liters Super and 20.6 kWh per 100 kilometers. He moves away from this value in everyday life. We have determined an average consumption of 1.8 liters and 15.8 kWh, which causes costs of 9.40 euros per 100 kilometers. On the Eco lap, the Lexus consumed 6.4 liters while consuming 7.3 liters on the Commuter route. If the Lexus was moved in a sporty manner, consumption rose to 11.8 liters. The average consumption hybrid is 7.8 liters. On the purely electric lap, the power consumption was 20.7 kWh. The fuel costs are calculated using the daily updated fuel price on our partner portal mehr-tanken (13.09.2022 / Super: 1,95 Euro/Liter). The electricity costs are calculated using the average household electricity price according to the BDEW Federal Association of Energy and Water Industries eV (average electricity price for a household with an annual consumption of 3,500 kWh: 0.3730 Euro/kWh. Basic price included pro rata, included tariff products and basic service tariffs including new customer tariffs, not volume-weighted). The electricity price at a public charging station is usually higher.

The test consumption consists of 70% from the commuter lap and 15% Eco and Sport each with an empty battery (SOC= state of charge).

Monthly maintenance costs

If you drive as resource-efficiently as we do on our eco-lap, the costs for 100 kilometers are reduced to 12.48 euros. The rather violent gait resulted in a sum of 23.01 euros. The costs in hybrid operation amount to 15.21 euros. Electricity costs of 7.72 euros are incurred on the purely electric route. The vehicle tax for the Lexus is 20 euros, the liability insurance 442 euros. Partial and fully comprehensive insurance add up to 219 and 1,282 euros respectively. Monthly maintenance costs of 346 euros are paid by those who drive the Lexus 15,000 kilometers a year. If the mileage is double, the sum increases to 654 euros. We leave out the loss in value in this calculation.

The 74,000-euro Lexus NX 450h + F Sport comes to the consumption check.

This is how it is tested

The auto motor und sport test consumption for plug-in hybrids consists of three differently weighted fuel consumption drives driven in hybrid mode. So-called “commuter consumption” accounts for 70 percent. This is a journey from home to work, which averages 21 kilometers (starting with an empty battery). A particularly economical, approx. 275-kilometre-long eco-lap (start with an empty battery) counts for 15 percent. The remaining 15 percent is accounted for by the sports driver lap. The length is roughly the same as the eco lap, but the route includes a larger proportion of motorway and thus higher speeds on average. An extra is the pure E round. This shows the maximum range in kilometers with a fully charged battery before the combustion engine starts. The consumption is calculated from the measured energy consumption including charging losses. The charging time for a full battery charge and the amount of energy in the battery, including charging losses, are also measured. The basis for calculating the fuel costs is always the price quoted on the “more tanken” portal on the day the article was created.

The monthly maintenance costs include maintenance, wear part costs and vehicle taxes based on an assumed annual mileage of 15,000 and 30,000 kilometers without loss of value. The basis for the calculation is the test consumption, a three-year holding period, no-claims class SF12 for liability and fully comprehensive insurance with Allianz including discounts for garage parkers and the restriction to certain drivers (not under 21). At Allianz, SF12 offers a discount rate of 34 percent for liability and 28 percent for comprehensive insurance.

In the auto motor und sport test consumption, the 74,000 euro Lexus NX 450h+ F Sport with 309 hp system performance ended up with an average value of 1.8 liters Super and 15.8 kWh per 100 kilometers. The combined fuel and electricity costs over this distance are 9.40 euros. The monthly maintenance costs are 346 euros (15,000 km annual mileage) or 654 euros (30,000 km annual mileage).
