Costa Rican clubs will face American opponents in the first round of the Concacaf Champions League.

Liga Deportiva Alajuelense will face Atlanta United FC on Tuesday, and Deportivo Saprissa will face Philadelphia Union on Wednesday in the largest club soccer tournament in the region.

CONCACAF notes that Alajuelense’s aggressive style could cause problems against an Atlanta team that will play its first game since last December. But the Costa Rican side will be deprived of several players in the second leg due to visa issues.

For Saprissa, the 2021 Champions League marks its 10th anniversaryme appearance in the tournament, as the Union makes its debut in the competition.

Alajuelense and Saprissa qualified for the Champions League thanks to their performance in the Concacaf League, which the red and black Livestock. Alajuelense is the only Central American team that has reached the semi-final of the Champions League twice.

Atlanta United makes its Champions League debut for the third year in a row, while Philadelphia Union makes its tournament debut.

Mexican teams have historically dominated the Concacaf Champions League, and Liga MX’s UANL is the reigning winner.
