Covid-19 Suspected of Triggering Mysterious Acute Hepatitis in Children, Study Explains – Researchers around the world continue to conduct in-depth studies related to the discovery of mysterious acute hepatitis in children that has spread in various countries, including Indonesia. However, a new study reveals that Covid-19 is thought to trigger a mysterious acute hepatitis.

Studies published in medRxiv on May 10, 2022, showed the corona virus or SARS-CoV-2 was suspected to be the cause of mysterious acute hepatitis in children.

In the study, which has not yet been peer reviewed, it is explained that children infected with Covid-19 tend to be at higher risk of developing liver dysfunction after recovery.

As reported by ReutersTuesday (17/5/2022) the researchers said there was a possibility that the children affected by the disease had not received the Covid-19 vaccination.

Another study also found the same thing, regarding a possible link between the corona virus super antigen and acute hepatitis.

According to a study published in The Lancet Gastroenterology & Hepatology On May 14, 2022, a patient with severe acute hepatitis was suspected of having been infected with the corona virus.

The infection may have mild symptoms, or be asymptomatic and go unnoticed. The researchers said that cases of acute hepatitis, may be related to Covid-19 infection caused by the corona virus, and triggered by adenoviruses in the digestive tract.

After infection with the corona virus that causes Covid-19 takes place, the reservoir (where the pathogen lives) can cause the activation of immune cells through super antigens which are the molecular structure of the corona virus.

This immune response is believed to have resulted in the multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C).

MIS-C is a condition that causes inflammation in various organs including the heart, lungs, kidneys, brain, skin, eyes, stomach, and liver after a child recovers from Covid-19. In fact, in severe cases MIS-C can cause death in children.

If their suspicions are correct, that Covid-19 triggers a mysterious acute hepatitis, then children infected with adenovirus 41F may have abnormalities in the immune system. Ultimately, the condition damages the liver and causes severe acute hepatitis.

“We recommend that children with acute hepatitis be screened for the presence of SARS-CoV-2 (the virus that causes Covid-19) in the stool,” the researchers wrote.
