Cristiano Ronaldo has suffered his first setback at his new club Al-Nassr. In the semi-finals of the Saudi Super Cup, he and his teammates failed because of Al-Ittihad.
AL Nassr lost well deserved with 1:3 (0:2). And Ronaldo? He had almost no influence on the game – only when the score was 0:1 did he have the chance to equalize with his only dangerous action.
Instead, Al-Ittihad, currently third in the Saudi Pro League, made it 2-0. Talisca scored for Al Nassr in the 67th minute before Muhannad al-Shanqeeti put the lid on it in injury time (90′ + 3′).
Al-Nassr coach Rudi Garcia subsequently blamed Ronaldo for the defeat. The France boss said at the post-match press conference: “One of the things that changed the course of the game was Cristiano Ronaldo’s missed chance in the first half.”
Ronaldo: Loss in friendly against Messi
Al-Ittihad fans greeted Ronaldo by chanting for Lionel Messi before the game. When CR7 entered the pitch, the Al-Ittihad fans could hear long-drawn-out “Messi” shouts, as you know them from the Camp Nou from the Argentine world champion’s Barcelona days.
Just recently, Ronaldo and his longtime Ballon d’Or rival met again in a friendly. Messi and Paris Saint-Germain won the game 5-4 against an all-star team of players from Al-Nassr and Al-Hilal.
In the league, Ronaldo had already disappointed with an unremarkable performance in his first game for the leaders in Saudi Arabia’s top division. Nevertheless, his team won 1-0 (1-0) against Al-Ettifaq.
