It was the transfer of last summer. Superstar Cristiano Ronaldo moved from Real Madrid to Juventus. Now sports director Fabio Paratici revealed that the Portuguese was not the first choice of the old lady.
In the summer left with Gianluigi Buffon club icon the Italian series champion Juventus Turin. In addition, the Old Lady was plagued with a bitter end in the Champions League, as the Italians against the eventual winner Real Madrid in the quarterfinals had to cancel the sails (0: 3, 3: 1).
Transfer should take Juventus to new levels
These aspects prompted the club leadership in the transfer market to send a positive signal for the future. "I met with President Andrea Agnelli, Pavel Nedved, and we agreed we had to do something to get players motivated to shock the whole environment, a positive shock that would take Juventus to a new level," explains Paratici to the Gazzetta dello sport,
The answer to this project was ultimately Cristiano Ronaldo. The Portuguese superstar came for 117 million euros from Real Madrid.
Icardi was first choice
As Paratici now revealed, CR7 was not the first choice to give the old lady new momentum. "There were two options: buying the first 'Icardi and kicking off an incredible theater, or we could get Cristiano Ronaldo."
Looking back, the people in charge at Juventus have made the right decision. While Mauro Icardi scored "only" 18 points at Inter in 28 games and has fallen out of favor with Inter Milan, Ronaldo has scored 31 goals in 31 matches for the Bianconeri (20 goals, eleven assists).
