Tijuana, Baja California (TorosDeTijuana.com-Armando Esquivel).- Manny Barrera shone on the mound to become the first Toros de Tijuana pitcher to exceed three hundred strikeouts and was backed by three home runs in a 6-3 win over Algodoneros Unión Laguna that matched the series before more than fifteen thousand fans gathered in the friendly confines of the Chevron stadium.
Junior Lake, Leandro Castro and Nick Williams lost balls behind the fences and the border team improved its record to 15-11 in second place in the North Zone, just below Tecolotes de los Dos Laredos.
The defending champion’s aggression was felt from the bottom of the first inning with two runs driven by Félix Pérez with an RBI single and Leandro Castro with a sacrifice fly.
One more in the second round with a board by Nick Williams throughout the center field, his seventh of the season and, already entered, the “horned” continued to point their cannons above the fence with loud bombardments from Junior Lake and Leandro Castro for the 5-0 with three innings in the book.
The visit took off the shutout in the fifth round with a home run by Edgar Robles, who took Ariel Campoy ahead, but the “burels” added one more at the end of that same episode with a double by José Guadalupe Chávez who sent Christian Zazueta with 6-2.
The last entry on the board was raised in the ninth inning with a hit by Alejandro Flores to left field, enough for Brian García to drop from second for the final numbers.
ON THE MOUNTAIN
Manny Barreda made history on the Chevron stadium mound by becoming the first pitcher to reach three hundred strikeouts wearing the Tijuana Toros jacket.
The right-hander entered the game with 297 chocolates and reached half a thousand strikeouts by shooting Fernando Flores for the first out of the second inning. He finished his performance with nine passed for strikes to stay at 306.
The former Major Leaguer earned his first win of the season by walking five innings of two runs, five hits and a walk. It was his 19th triumph with Toros de Tijuana.
Kevin Quackenbush, Roel Ramírez, Sam Dyson and Fernando Rodney took over.
For Algodoneros Unión Laguna, starter Jordan Guerrero lost in three innings of five runs, six hits, three of them home runs, one strikeout and two walks. He was helped by Alex Gallegos, who received a run in the fourth set, Manuel Báez, Juan Ramón Noriega and Jordan Suárez but it was too late.
