Governor Andrew Cuomo on Monday urged local governments to reopen homeless shelters amid the surge in camps amid the coronavirus pandemic.
The president said the state will issue guidance for the safe reopening of shelters as temperatures begin to drop.
“We know how to open schools, how to open restaurants, how to open art areas. It’s cold, nobody should be on the streets, especially during a global health pandemic, “he said in a conference call with journalists.
“A camp for the homeless is not only a violation of that person’s dignity, it is now a threat to public health,” he added.
The camps are located in urban areas throughout the state, especially in New York City.
“Local governments closed shelters during COVID, but they must reopen those shelters. The public is concerned about public health, I am concerned about the health of the homeless,” he said.
