Danny John-Jules to Streng: What was Danny John-Jules? TV and movie roles listed

Strict Come Dancing candidate Danny John-Jules is one of the most prominent stars in this year's BBC series.

The 58-year-old actor, singer and dancer has been making a career since the 1970s.

He is perhaps best known for his role as Cat in the sci-fi comedy series Red Dwarf.

John-Jules has been an integral part of the show since the founding of the show in 1988 and is part of the central cast.

His other big profile role was in the sun-kissed crime series Death in Paradise of the BBC, which portrays police officer Dwayne Myers.

The actor decided to say goodbye to the show after nearly a decade.

John-Jules said in the TV Times: "I left death in paradise because I wanted to go back on stage.

"I needed a bit more razzmatazz in my life, and then came Strictly!"

He continued, "I have not done any yet [stage] I've been showing it for more than 20 years, so it's as close as I'm going to make jazz hands again.

"I also worked on my one-man show about Sammy Davis Jr. so I always wear a melon!"

In addition to Red Dwarf and Death in Paradise, John-Jules has played the musical Barrington and the children's show The Tomorrow People as Byron Lucifer in Maid Marian and her Merry Men.

His other television credits include The Demon Headmaster, M.I. High, Bob the Builder, The Crouches and Chop Socky Chooks.

The actor had minor roles in The Bill, Doctors and Casualty.

John-Jules is no stranger to the big screen, with roles in Blade II, Little Horror Stores, Labyrinth, Lock, Stick and Two Smoking Barrels and Scum.

The London-born star came to the show business early on with acting lessons before starring in the original cast of Starlight Express by Lord Andrew Lloyd Webber.

He was also a dancer in a group called Second Generation and Wham! Video for Edge of Heaven.

Judging by his exit from Paradise, it is likely that John-Jules will re-enter the boards.

The multi-talented star will delight jurors this week as he and his professional partner Amy Dowden complete a Quickstep to Freedom by Pharrell Williams.

John-Jules was in the top half of Strictly Come Dancing's ranking last week after being awarded 30 points by the judges.

However, he has to face some tough competitors from other stars like Faye Tozer of Steps and Pussycat Dolls, Ashley Roberts.

Strictly come dancing tonight at 19:05 on BBC One
