VIVA – The Darul Falah Islamic Boarding School in Sidoarjo, East Java, routinely conducts mass marriages every five years for local students who want to build a household, without knowing who their potential partner is.
The chairman of the Dalilul Falihin Foundation, the Darul Falah Islamic Boarding School, Syaiful Bakri, when confirmed in Sidoarjo, Saturday, May 28, 2022, said that this year was the seventh time the mass marriage was held. “A total of 22 couples were married this year, namely on Sunday (22/5),” he said.
He said the brides who were married were students who had been studying at the Islamic boarding school, not from outside the Islamic boarding school. Furthermore, after marriage, they were placed in cubicles around the Islamic boarding school before they were dispatched to assist Islamic boarding schools in various regions.
Since the first mass marriage was held until now the number of participants is about 250 couples. “Those who are getting married don’t know who will be their soul mate because everything is kept a secret until after the reading of the marriage agreement is done, then they meet their respective partners,” he said.
He said there was no coercion on the students whether they wanted to marry fellow students in the cottage or with other people.
“Even if they want, yes, they will sign it, and later Mrs. Nyai (Umi Habibah) as the caretaker of this Islamic boarding school will decide. Because to determine someone’s partner is not easy,” he said.
