Kevin De Bruyne has revealed how he could leave Chelsea to connect with Borussia Dortmund with Jurgen Klopp – until Jose Mourinho prevented that.
The Manchester City star is firmly established as one of the Premier League's most talented players, though in Chelsea he only glimpsed his potential in earlier days.
At this time, much was written about the relationship of the player with the then Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho, who rarely looked at the Belgian star De Bruyne, before the club moved him to Wolfsburg.
That sale was a big mistake for Chelsea when De Bruyne was named Bundesliga Player of the Year in 2015 before setting a record 55-million-pound city record this summer.
The player's career, however, would have taken a very different path if Mourinho had not prevented the player from joining forces with Klopp at Borussia Dortmund.
"When I was at Chelsea, there was so much in the press about my relationship with Jose Mourinho," De Bruyne said The players tribune,
"But the truth is, I only talked to him twice. The plan has always been for me to borrow a bit.
"So I went to Werder Bremen in 2012 and this season was great."
De Bruyne continue: "When I returned to Chelsea next summer, some German clubs wanted to sign me.
"[Jurgen] Klopp wanted me to come to Borussia Dortmund and they played football the way I like it.
"So I thought maybe Chelsea would let me go.
"But then Mourinho sent me a text message: 'You stay. I want you to be part of this team. "
Despite assurances of the season off MourinhoDe Bruyne only played in the Premier League three times before being sold to Wolfsburg.
And the playmaker admits that Mourinho would rather have stayed with him.
He added, "I think Jose was a bit disappointed, but to be fair, I think he also understood that I had to play.
"So the club sold me and there was not a big problem at all. Chelsea got more than twice the price they paid for me and I found myself in a much better situation in Wolfsburg. "
