The civil right and the left have agreed the regional elections among themselves. The extreme right remained marginalized and was unable to conquer a single region. President Macron’s ruling party hardly played a role either.
Marine Le Pen’s party will not rule any region in France in the future either. After a significant decrease in their share of the vote, the right-wing extremist Rassemblement national (RN) clearly missed its target on Sunday. In the second round of the French regional elections, all eyes were on the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur region. After the first round of elections last Sunday, the coastal region in the south of France was the only region in which the successor party to the Front National had realistic chances of victory.
