Delta variant spreads in Russia – rush to the airport

The federal government has declared Russia a virus variant area, now many Germans want to leave. Moscow and St. Petersburg – a venue for the European Football Championship – are particularly hard hit.

The corona situation is worsening in Russia. Moscow has recorded the highest number of corona deaths in a Russian city since the pandemic began. Authorities in the capital reported 144 deaths within 24 hours on Sunday – more than any other city in the country, according to Russian news agencies. The European Championship venue St. Petersburg had only recorded a peak on Saturday with 107 deaths.

Across Russia, 599 deaths were recorded on Sunday; the authorities also reported 20,538 new infections. Due to the spread of the particularly contagious delta variant, the number of infections has recently risen sharply again. For travelers to Germany, massive restrictions should apply due to the corona situation.

Rush to Moscow Sheremetyevo Airport

In addition to Portugal, the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) also wants to classify Russia as a virus variant area on Tuesday, which results in a far-reaching ban on transport and strict quarantine rules. The RKI announced on Friday evening. As a result, there was apparently a rush at Moscow’s Sheremetyevo airport. The ARD Moscow reports on Twitter:

According to Mayor Sergej Sobyanin, almost 90 percent of the infections in Moscow were due to the delta variant a week ago. There is no official information for all of Russia. According to Health Minister Michail Muraschko, 2.5 million doses of the Russian vaccine “Sputnik Light” are to be delivered.

Tens of thousands celebrate in St. Petersburg

In St. Petersburg, too, there is growing concern about the uncontrolled spread of the delta variant. Thousands of students celebrated their graduation there on Friday night, most of them without protective masks, reported as the radio station Echo Moskwy reported.

Tens of thousands of people are said to have walked the streets in the center of the city. Photos and videos showed them dancing tightly together and watching large fireworks on the Neva River at night.

According to local media, many hospitals in St. Petersburg are already overloaded with corona patients. However, the authorities are of the opinion that the European Football Championship and a large economic forum at the beginning of the month have no influence on the infection situation.
