Lovato, who wants to be addressed both gender-neutral and with feminine pronouns, once had her breakthrough as a child star in the series Barney & Friends. She was then ten years old. Also their work for Camp Rock contributed to their success early on.
In the documentary, thirty-year-old Lovato looks at the highs and lows of well-known former child stars who grew up in the spotlight. She also examines her own experiences.
“There is no better film or better subject imaginable for my directorial debut than this story, because it is so close to me,” the American said in a statement. The actress makes no secret of the fact that her fame gave her problems with the use of narcotics and developed an eating disorder.
The project “teach us about how to protect our borders and better decide our own destiny,” says Lovato.
It is not yet known which other former child stars Lovato for her project Child Stars wants to follow. The documentary should appear on streaming service Hulu next year.
