Demolish missiles in central Syria

Duma, Syria Syria’s anti-aircraft batteries faced a new “aggression” and shot down missiles aimed at the Shayrat air base in Homs province, in the center of the country, early on Tuesday, Syrian state television said. Syrian defenses toppled most of the six missiles launched against the base, the network said. They also reported an air strike against the Dumayr air base near Damascus. The report did not provide details of the offensive nor did it indicate who carried out the attacks. A Pentagon spokesman said there was no US military activity in that area. Meanwhile, Russian and Syrian authorities prevented independent investigators from entering the site of a suspected chemical attack, the director of a chemical weapons control group said on Monday, thus blocking international efforts to find out what happened and find the person responsible. The United States and France said they have evidence of the use of toxic gases during the attack on April 7 against the town of Duma – under rebel control – in which dozens of people were killed. They also claimed that the army of Syrian President Bashar Assad was responsible for the attack. But they have not released any of these tests, even after both nations, along with Britain, launched attacks on facilities that they claim are related to Syria’s chemical weapons program. Syria and its ally, Russia, deny that any chemical attack has occurred, and the Russian authorities even accused Great Britain of mounting a false chemical attack. British Prime Minister Theresa May accused the two nations – whose forces now control the town east of Damascus – of trying to cover up the evidence. Many questions about the attack have gone unanswered due to the lack of access of Duma to the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW). The OPCW Director General, Ahmet Uzumcu, said Syrian and Russian authorities argued “pending security issues” to prevent inspectors from entering Duma. “The team is not yet deployed in Duma,” Uzumcu told a meeting of the OPCW board in The Hague.
