Denmark wants to cause a sensation again at the European Championship. The team of the former Mainz trainer Kaspar Hjulmand is supposed to be helped by a Bundesliga quartet around Borussia Dortmund’s midfield clearer Thomas Delaney.
The Danes’ EM timetable:
June 12 (6 p.m., ZDF): Denmark – Finland (Copenhagen)
June 17th (6 p.m., ZDF): Denmark – Belgium (Copenhagen)
June 21 (6 p.m., ARD / Telekom): Russia – Denmark (Copenhagen)
It is difficult to make a reliable statement about the Danish national team’s chances of success. The last title win was almost 30 years in the past, but in 1992 not everything went smoothly and there was little to suggest that the Danes would become European champions. As a replacement for Yugoslavia, which was banned due to the Balkan Wars, the team saved themselves with a victory in the knockout round, reached the final in extra time and finally beat the favorites Germany 2-0 in the final.

At the European Championship, Kasper Hjulmand’s team is still aiming for the title – and again not everything goes as planned in the Danish camp. Hoffenheim’s Robert Skov threatens to be out, while Leipzig’s Yussuf Poulsen benefits from an injury during the Bundesliga season. And the coach surprisingly comes to his first international tournament a little earlier than planned.
Hjulmand, coach of 1. FSV Mainz 05 from 2014 to 2015, should actually only follow Age Hareide after the planned European championship. But because the tournament had to be postponed due to the corona pandemic, the native of Aalborg took over the selection earlier. The 49-year-old has four Bundesliga professionals at his disposal, although the use of Hoffenheim’s Skov after his injury in the test against Bosnia (2-0) is questionable. The left foot had injured his left ankle. Immediately afterwards, no one could say how serious the injury was.

On the other hand, attacker Poulsen has recovered from his injury. In April, the striker from runner-up RB Leipzig missed a few games due to a muscle injury – that actually helped him, as he recently explained surprisingly: “I’m in good shape now. For me it was a good time to take a little break. “
The third member is Thomas Delaney from Borussia Dortmund. The midfielder also went through a period of suffering. He took a muscle injury from the 2019/20 season with him into the following season, after which he suffered from Achilles tendon and back problems. Nevertheless, its quality is undisputed. Delaney is considered an uncompromising clearer who has two strong competitors in the midfield of Borussia Dortmund. The competition for the starting place with Jude Bellingham and Mahmoud Dahoud made the national player even better. In the Danish selection, he has already become an integral part. The team last started without him in October 2016. Since then he has completed 40 international matches in a row for his home country. There he belongs to the tribe as well as the former Munich-based Pierre Emile Höjbjerg.
Last but not least, Schalke keeper Frederik Rönnow is also there. His main task will be to sit in the neck of Kaspar Schmeichel, who was set in goal, and to encourage him to perform at his best. Maximum performance that the Danish team will need if they want to achieve the ambitious goals,
