If tomorrow you are entitled to ‘pico y placa’, you already know that you cannot use your vehicle, but there are alternatives in Bucaramanga. Resolution 519 of 2021 of the Bucaramanga Traffic Directorate establishes certain benefits for some vehicles, which provides alternatives in mobility.
If you know this measure, surely you have a CNG vehicle, Natural Gas Vehicle, an alternative fuel to gasoline, cleaner, cheaper and whose vehicle is not restricted to circulate on “peak and license plate” days in our city.
“Vehicles that use Natural Gas Vehicle (NGV) from the factory or those converted to this fuel, models 2015 and later, that have a current Installation Certificate (NGV)” can travel without any restriction, in accordance with Resolution 519/ twenty-one. The foregoing applies to all kinds of private and public service vehicles, except individual public service type taxi, expresses the norm.
In Colombia, the automotive fleet has more than 500 thousand vehicles that operate with CNG, according to Naturgas. Of these, 190 thousand are individuals (cars, vans, campers and trucks, among others). In Bucaramanga and its metropolitan area there are already about 6,800 vehicles that run on CNG.
Undoubtedly, measures such as that of the city’s Traffic Directorate have stimulated the use of CNG in our environment, a friendly fuel in all senses. In addition, in Bucaramanga and the metropolitan area, CNG has, on average, 35% savings compared to gasoline. In other words, each user who supplies himself with Natural Gas for Vehicles does so with 35% less value than for a gasoline vehicle. Given the eventual rise in the prices of liquid fuels in the coming months, the savings for NGV users will be greater.
If the analysis is transferred to global benefits, we must stop at the environmental impact. CNG reduces between 70 and 94% emissions of particulate matter, which drastically impact air quality since they are the ones that cause respiratory diseases. In addition, this fuel reduces CO2 emissions by around 30%. But its benefits do not end there.
The ABC of CNG
What is Vehicle Natural Gas? It is the same fuel that is used in our homes or industries. In vehicular use, the pressure increases through a compression process and is then stored in high-resistance cylinders.
Safety: Being a gaseous fuel, in the event of a leak it dissolves in the air. Liquid fuels, such as gasoline and diesel, spill on the ground and are easy to burn.
Dedicated vehicles: These are vehicles that come from the factory designed solely to work with CNG.
Converted vehicles: These are vehicles that were originally designed to work with gasoline, but by converting to CNG they can operate with both fuels, which is known as dual or hybrid.
From gasoline to CNG
Owning a Natural Gas Vehicle is very easy. In Bucaramanga and the metropolitan area, Grupo Vanti has six certified workshops to convert to CNG, that is, they have the endorsement and guarantees for this type of installation (cylinders and accessories to bring gas to the engine), which requires a high-level technical knowledge and special job skills.
Installation costs depend on the type of vehicle and model; There are incentives granted by Ecopetrol and Gasoriente (Vanti Group company) to subsidize about 75% of the value, whose average is between $3.5 million and $4 million.
In addition, Gasoriente offers financing through the residential natural gas service bill, in other words, the vehicle can be converted to Vehicular Natural Gas without taking a single peso out of your pocket and the installation will only take one or two days.
Added to this list is the growth of the network of stations throughout the country. In Bucaramanga and its metropolitan area, for example, there are 22 CNG service stations, 13 of them Vanti brand. Investments are being made in Colombia to expand the NGV EDS network, there are currently more than 700 stations nationwide that operate with NGV.
There are more reasons of support and confidence to decide on NGV. As part of the automotive industry’s commitment to the use of cleaner fuels, at least 24 recognized brands with more than 35 vehicle lines maintain the factory warranty for this type of technology. Currently, dealers offer mixed vehicles (NGV and gasoline) and dedicated, that is, they come from the factory only
The Natural Gas Vehicle is part of a global commitment to sustainable mobility. It is a technology approved in the world and, in Colombia, several cities have recognized the benefits of public transport. Each citizen can contribute to improving the environment around them, converting their private vehicle to Natural Gas Vehicle.
