District council: too little money for siren promotion

According to the district council, the eight million euros provided by the federal and state governments for the expansion of the siren system in Rhineland-Palatinate are far from sufficient. The sum must be increased, said the director of the Rhineland-Palatinate district council, Burkhard Müller, on Friday after consultations with local representatives and disaster control inspectors in Ulmen (Cochem-Zell district). It is important to be able to inform the population quickly and well in the event of a disaster – “and we want to have the latest material across the board”.

First of all, according to Müller, there should be an inventory of existing siren systems and possible gaps. The new warning system will also be an issue in the state parliament’s commission of inquiry. The committee is to develop recommendations for action for civil protection and adaptation to climate change. Müller sits on the committee as an expert on civil protection structures.

According to him, there should be a large-scale exercise in Rhineland-Palatinate next year. At the meeting on Friday, various scenarios that could be played out were discussed. The impact of a catastrophe on the critical infrastructure is conceivable, said Müller. Experts from the ADD supervisory authority and the Ministry of the Interior would deal with the possible “script” for the exercise. The meeting on Friday was also about how communication between the bodies entrusted with civil protection could be improved.
