Disturbing journalism

With the Dutch journalist Mrs. Ingeborg Begel, at the beginning of November 2021, things were easy for that part of the defenders of the country’s infamous brand name, who, shrinking it, identify it with the television image of Mr. Kyriakos Mitsotakis. They declared her anti-Greek, mocked her red hat, which they treated as a presumption of Bolshevik hypocrisy, and cleaned her up. “I understand that in the Netherlands you have a culture of asking politicians questions directly,” the then prime minister had said, hearing the question “when will you stop lying about the push backs and what is happening with the refugees in Greece?”. And finding the question insulting, he answered with a question: “Have you been to Samos?”.

Things were more difficult at the end of that same November, in an interview of Mr. Mitsotakis in the Washington Post, with Mrs. Lally Weymouth. “The Greek Parliament,” the American woman had said, “just passed a law that makes it a criminal offense to publish ‘fake news.’ I think that would be a big mistake. What do you need the attack on the media?’ “What we do is very measured,” Mitsotakis had replied, but the American insisted, even though she was not wearing a red hat. “Why are you doing this; The slope is slippery.” The prime minister’s escape through flattery was almost forced: “You are an experienced journalist. I will take your comment seriously.”

And he did take her seriously: Mrs. Weymouth’s disturbing questions were not in the briefing note he had distributed immediately after the Maximus Palace, which had kept only those questions that painted a favorable image for the government. At APE, which came under the jurisdiction of Mr. Mitsotakis from the first day of his government, they thought that there was no reason to do their own reporting and contented themselves with reproducing the government note verbatim. The pro-government (or pro-Michigan?) media picked it up and rebroadcast it from the APE, also ratheously, acting (and) in this case as sub-information media.

Third annoying journalist, the British-Iranian Mrs. Christiane Amanpour, who seems to have taken a line from the accursed Dutch woman. She also asked about the push backs, in the first post-election interview of Mr. Mitsotakis, on CNN. But tomorrow is another day.
