Hours of sitting, according to a recent study, shrink parts of the brain that play an important role in memory. Scientists at the University of California surveyed 35 subjects between the ages of 45 and 75 years to what they had been doing the previous week – how many hours a day they had been active, and how many hours they had spent sitting on average. The researchers then took MRI images (magnetic resonance tomography) of the brains of all subjects and looked more closely at the so-called temporal lobes (temporal lobes) of the subjects. They were interested in the thickness of a certain region of the temporal lobe, the so-called medial part – because there sits the hippocampus, which among other things is responsible for the transmission of information from short-term to long-term memory.
