DPR Approves Naturalization of Marc Anthony Klok and 3 Basketball Athletes

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – The DPR RI Plenary Session approved applications for consideration of citizenship of the Republic of Indonesia for four athletes of foreign nationals, Monday, October 5, 2020.

The agreement was a follow-up to the previous discussion at the DPR Commission III Working Meeting on the same day with the Minister of Youth and Sports Zainudin Amali, Minister of Law and Human Rights Yasonna Laoly, PSSI General Chair Mochammad Iriawan, PB Perbasi Chairman Danny Kosasih, and four candidate athletes naturalization.

The four athletes are US basketball player Brandon Van Dorn Jawato, British basketball player Lester Prosper, Canadian basketball player Kimberly Pierre Louis, and Dutch soccer player Marc Anthony Klok.

“Can the application for consideration of citizenship of the Republic of Indonesia on behalf of Brandon Van Dorn Jawato, Lester Prosper, Kimberly Pierre Louis, and Marc Anthony Klok be approved?” present both physically and virtually.

Jawato and Lester are expected to immediately obtain Indonesian citizenship status so that they can strengthen the basketball national team in the two remaining matches against Thailand and South Korea in November to qualify for the qualifying phase for the 2021 FIBA ​​Asian Cup.

Indonesia must at least occupy the top 10 positions in the 2021 FIBA ​​Asian Cup if it wants to appear at the 2023 FIBA ​​World Cup as host.

Likewise, Kimberly is expected to be able to defend the Indonesian women’s basketball team. Meanwhile, the presence of attacking midfielder Marc Anthony Klok, who is currently in the uniform of Persija Jakarta, is expected to increase the strength of the national team in various tournaments in order to increase Indonesia’s FIFA ranking.

After getting approval from the DPR, in accordance with Law no. 12 of 2006 concerning Citizenship of the Republic of Indonesia, the four athletes just have to wait until the issuance of a Presidential Decree before proceeding with an oath or promise as Indonesian citizens at the appointed regional office or Kemkumham Regional Office.
