DRC: NGO calls on government to guarantee primary health care to artisanal miners

The NGO Health Focus recommended, Friday, May 13, to the Congolese government to guarantee primary health care to artisanal miners, exposed to various diseases.

This international structure made this recommendation in a study presented during a workshop in Kinshasa.

Among these diseases, project manager at Health Focus, Muriel Krammisch, notes those related to dust and sexually transmitted diseases (STDs).

“We mainly have dust which can promote diseases like tuberculosis and silicosis, but we also have mercury poisoning for miners looking for gold. We also have noise-related hearing loss,” he explained.

For Health Focus, the government will also have to make these diggers aware of the risks of their work.

“We also need their [creuseurs] guarantee access to basic needs, drinking water, sanitary facilities and provide information on preventive measures,” added Muriel Krammisch.
