Driven by: Škoda Karoq NU, 2022

All Škoda models are now based on one of the sub-versions of the MQB modular system, the modular cross-motor cabinet, since the Fabia model change. Karoq is based on the MQB A1, with SEAT Ateca and Volkswagen T-Roc being the two closest relatives within the group. The primary goal of Škoda Karoq’s further development is to curb consumption and emissions, largely by cutting back on air resistance.

For aerodynamic reasons, the entire chassis is now covered. Longer in the rear spoiler, tiny air deflectors at the edges of the rear windshield direct the flowing air and new streamlined rims with air deflector inserts. Plastic pads snap off, but it’s worth using because the wheels alone are responsible for about a quarter of a car’s air resistance. Probably not because of the surface coming from them on the front surface, but because of the vortices caused by the wheels.

The air curtain has also changed. With the help of air passing through the gaps at the edges of the bumpers, the goal is to divert the airflows around the bumper more efficiently, which reduces the swirling of air behind the front wheels and on the side of the car. On the 1.0 TSI, an electric shutter can close some of the cooling vents if the car does not need full cooling capacity. The tank of the 4 × 4 models is also covered.

Together, these modifications have reduced the car’s air resistance by more than 9 percent. The shape factor has also improved, the lowest value is now 0.301, which is very good in this category. The SEAT Ateca’s reduced-clearance Eco-design had a 0.30-factor figure for the new Nissan Qashqai.

Since the value communicated is the best model data, are you interested in how much worse it is than the others? Although the lower casing is a bit different with each engine, Radek Havlik, Škoda’s compact product line development manager, was reassured that the difference was not measured in centuries but in thousands.

At the same time, the 4 × 4 goes up to 0.37 on Sportline-equipped diesels. The Yeti’s form factor was a minimum of 0.37, only the GreenLine after the model update was 0.355 with the bottom cover and 25mm planting.

The new oil in the hydraulic clutch of 4 × 4 cars reduces fuel consumption somewhat. Modifying the brakes also affects consumption and thus pollution by reducing friction. With the new solution, the brake discs and brake pads fit less tightly and the wheels can rotate more easily.

With its renovation, Karoq is also switching to the Evo engine generation. Diesel engines will remain after the upgrade, accounting for 35 percent of the 566,000 cars produced so far. DSG accounts for 65 percent of the transmissions, so all-wheel-drive versions can only be associated with the dual-clutch, seven-speed automatic.

All engines have two camshafts and four valves per cylinder. Gasolines use plasma-coated cylinder liners and a crankcase to reduce friction and thus fuel consumption. Unfortunately, there was no specialist on site for this particular topic, so no one could tell if the gasoline turbocharger had a variable blade geometry.

110 horsepower is the three-cylinder, 999 cc petrol, the 1.5 TSI is 150 horsepower. The 190 hp 2.0 TSI is only available in Sportline versions. There are 116 or 150 horsepower diesel, each running on double AdBlue. As the upper torque limit of the seven-speed, dry-clutch double-clutch transmission is 250 Nm, the 116-horsepower diesel delivers 300 newton meters with a manual transmission and only 250 Newton meters with an automatic transmission.

There is no 12- or 48-volt auxiliary hybrid system for either engine, and you can’t get a plug-in battery-powered hybrid from Karoq, even though the Volkswagen Group has it all on the shelf. According to Škoda, it was not worthwhile to include these improvements in the remaining model cycle, as they are more in demand in Octavia and Superb in their customer base.

The wheel size is between 16 and 19 inches, the smallest size includes a decorative steel rim and alloy wheels, the larger ones only the latter. A lower guard can still be ordered for HUF 71,120, but it does not have an increased clearance against bad road packages, but consists of a lower engine cover and provides reinforced protection on the rear lower swingarms, parking brake cable and brake hoses.

I didn’t find it among the extras, but according to the factory press release, adaptive damping is available in Ambition, Style and Sportline versions. This is a very important item because it makes the car much more comfortable and inexpensive for other models compared to what you can add to the value in use of a Škoda Karoq. The torque of the 2.0 TDIs is shift dependent. The 116-horsepower maximum is reduced by 50 Nm with the dry-clutch DSG, while the 150-horsepower, oil-cooled, more-cooled double-clutch version would be larger than with a manual transmission. A valuable development is the matrix LED headlight, which obscures vehicles in front of it or from the front by dynamically deactivating and activating certain LEDs from the high beam.

There is sign detection from the driver assistance system, and sensors with a range of 70 m scan the area next to and behind the car. The lane holder is now said to be able to interpret lane dividers temporarily deposited for road construction, and the predictive cruise control automatically reduces speed when approaching a roundabout if desired.

DSG cars are able to stop on their own, lock the car and turn on the hazard warning lights in the event of driver illness, this does not work with a manual transmission because there is no one to shift the transmission into neutral. When parking, the car brakes for us if we hit something in front of or behind it. Reversing aid helps maneuver when we’re towing something, it shows where and how much we’re turning the steering wheel.
