Sony Group Corp (NYSE:SONY) reportedly cut its forecast for shipments of PlayStation VR2 scheduled to go on sale on February 22.

What happened

Sony has scaled back production of its much-hyped PlayStation VR2 as its pre-orders were much lower than expected, Bloomberg reported.

Sony previously aimed to have two million headsets ready for launch, but has now halved its forecast for this quarter, people familiar with the deliberations said.

The company now plans to ship approximately 1.5 million VR2 units between April 2023 and March 2024, though this number is subject to adjustment with respect to demand.

Sony has informed a supplier partner that it expects relatively fewer display panel orders than previously anticipated.

Because it is important

The drop in demand comes at a time when the VR industry is already struggling.

The sales of Quest 2 of Meta Platforms Inc. (NASDAQ:META) fell significantly after the tech giant raised the price of the product. In the same way, Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) has decided to reduce its hololens glasses with AR/MR headsets, the report noted.

Despite this, it is expected that Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) launched its first MR headphones in the spring of this year. How the changing dynamics of the VR industry will affect the launch of the Cupertino-based giant’s latest flagship product remains to be seen.

Sony previously indicated that the PlayStation VR2 headset and Sense controllers will be available at a price of USD 549.99.
