Elon Musk says hydrogen storage is useless. do you agree?

Much has been said about hydrogen and green hydrogen as viable alternatives to fossil fuels. In what was a somewhat controversial summit, Elon Musk said that hydrogen energy storage technology is useless.

This is not the first time that the Tesla CEO has been skeptical of hydrogen.

The Financial Times summit, “Future of the Car”, which took place between the 9th and 12th of May, was a gateway to several statements that we have come to know. Elon Musk couldn't miss it and he also shared opinions that may not be unanimous.

I can't really emphasize this enough - the number of times I've been asked about hydrogen, it could be... it's well over 100, maybe 200 times.

Said Elon Musk during his speech.

In the opinion of Tesla's CEO, hydrogen energy storage is useless. According to CNBC, Elon Musk explained that he is against storing hydrogen, since larger tanks are needed for its use. This is because the deposits needed to store the element have to be larger than those needed to store electrical energy, for example.

hydrogen storage

Although controversial, this is not the first time that Elon Musk has been skeptical of hydrogen. In fact, in 2020, he mentioned that fuel cells are like “silly sales” and that hydrocarbons and electrolysis are not natural. In his opinion, when breaking down hydrocarbons, fossil fuels remain an issue, and electrolysis is also not as efficient as claimed.

If on the one hand Elon Musk is against hydrogen, on the other, energy agencies are quite optimistic about him. The International Energy Agency., for example, states that it is quite versatile, serving to respond to various sectors, such as transport and industry, due to its wide range of applications.
