The Washington Capitals put winger TJ Oshie on the injury list Friday morning with a lower body injury.
Oshie was injured in the third period in the Capitals’ 3-2 overtime loss to Detroit on Wednesday. The veteran landed a right-footed shot from Red Wings defenseman Danny DeKeyser. Oshie went to the bench after the shot, but he finished the game without missing any changes.
To replace Oshie, who is third on the team in goals (four) and points (six), the Capitals have recalled Hershey’s winger Brett Leason. Leason, 22, has not played in an NHL game. He was drafted by Washington in the second round of the 2019 NHL Draft.
Leason scored one goal in Hershey’s first five games of the season. Last season, he scored nine goals and collected 11 assists in 33 games for the Bears. He has 35 points in 88 career games with Hershey.
Oshie joins center Nicklas Backstrom on the injured reserve list. Backstrom was placed on long-term IR the day before the start of the season due to a hip injury, but coach Peter Laviolette said last week he was “progressing” and skating on his own.
Oshie and Backstrom will both be eligible to return on November 6 against Philadelphia.
