Emery celebrates a year at Villarreal where he is already a benchmark

Villarreal (Castellón), Jul 23 (EFE) .- Unai Emery meets this July 23, the day on which his signing was announced, one year at the helm of the Villarreal CF project, in a relationship that from the first moment has worked to expected level, being the coach right now a benchmark of the club and one of the values of the Roig project, after having won the first title in the history of the entity last season after winning the Europa League against Manchester United

The arrival of the coach at the La Plana club was the bet to make the final leap and for the team to aspire to privileged places in the league, to which was added the option of being able to approach the coveted title. For this reason, the club decided to change Javier Calleja to the head of the team, despite the fact that the Madrid coach had reached the European goal. But the bet for a change and the arrival of a reference coach was already taken, with the signing of Unai Emery for three seasons.

For his part, the Basque coach was looking for a long-term project and a return to Spanish football, following his steps in France with Paris Saint Germain and England with Arsenal.

Emery arrived at Villarreal, who wanted to make the final leap, with the idea of being able to play his first grand final after five unsuccessful attempts, which the coach achieved in his first year, in which he not only reached the long-awaited final but also He won the title after a historic penalty shoot-out (11-10), which marked the fourth winged of the second European competition for Emery after the previous three achieved with Sevilla.

The achievement of the Europa League title also meant the return to the Champions League, the second major objective of the entity, which had not been achieved through league competition.

The coach’s numbers show an average of 52% wins, 28% draws and 20% losses. Thus, of the 57 official matches directed by Emery, the yellow team has added 30 victories, 16 draws and only 11 defeats.

In LaLiga, Villarreal did not achieve direct qualification for European competitions after the team went through a series of injuries and poor results that prevented them from remaining in the fight for the Champions League places first and the Europa League places later.

In short competitions such as the Europa League and the Copa del Rey, the team competed to the maximum, winning in the first and being eliminated in the quarterfinals in the second.

After his first year, Emery has been able to put together a solid team with a clear idea of the game, being the 1-4-3-3 system the chosen one. He has also highlighted the work of the Basque coach when it comes to betting on the people of the quarry, giving entry to the team to several young talents such as Fer Niño, Yeremi Pino or Álex Baena, who have enjoyed many minutes and have joined as members of the first team.

In addition, the coach has empowered players such as Alfonso Pedraza, Pau Torres, Manu Trigueros or Gerard Moreno, who have taken another step in their performance.

After this first year at the head of the team, the coach now faces the challenge of continuing to grow in this second season in which his hand is already more noticeable in the decisions to build the squad with the exits and entrances more than his profile.
