Erdogan, Trump discuss Turkish bank, joint patrols in Syria

ISTANBUL – The Turkish president says Donald Trump has promised to investigate potential US action against a Turkish bank to circumvent sanctions against Iran.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan reported on Thursday a telephone conversation with Trump on Thursday as relations between the two countries eased following the release of an American pastor by Turkey.

Erdogan said he raised the issue of the state-owned Halkbank, which has been charged in New York with indictment for participating in a program to circumvent US sanctions against Iran. Turkey claims that Halkbank has not violated the sanctions.

Erdogan says Trump "said he would inform his ministers immediately." It was not clear what Trump could do.

They also discussed joint military patrols in Manbij in northern Syria.

Erdogan says he will meet Trump in France next weekend.
