  • Fireworks are no longer allowed to be set off in downtown Bern.
  • The municipal council has put the new fireworks regulations into effect.
  • The city council passed the bill in February.

The burning of fireworks in the perimeter of the Unesco World Heritage Site and the adjacent bridges is prohibited from July 20, 2021. The ban on fireworks also applies on August 1st and on New Year’s Eve.

Fines of up to 5000 francs were threatened, as the local council emphasized. The old town area of the Unesco World Heritage Site extends from the Hirschengraben in the west to the Nydeggbrücke at the end of the Aare peninsula.

In the past few years, there had been more delicate scenes in connection with fireworks in downtown Bern. The local council asserted that the safety distances to people, buildings and combustible materials could hardly be observed in the old town. The fact that nothing serious has happened yet borders on a miracle.

In order to make the population aware of the new regulation, the municipal council is launching a campaign with various Bernese slogans such as “Es Füür chunnt tüür”.

Other cities banned fireworks a long time ago. In the old town of Thun, for example, pyromaterial has been strictly prohibited since 2002. Cities in Germany, Austria and Italy have also issued a corresponding ban to protect their historic inner cities.
