EU summit: Costa and Guterres defend aid to more fragile countries

The Portuguese government advises the European Union (EU) not to forget the commitments it signed with the African Union, as well as the necessary support for fragile countries in Latin America. These are two examples given by the Prime Minister, António Costa, on the need for the war in Ukraine to be analyzed, also, from the point of view of the impacts on the rest of the world.

António Costa is thus in tune with the UN secretary general, António Guterres, who came to the Brussels summit to ask for support to redesign cooperation policies for development.

“It is important for the EU to be able to listen to the wise and common-sense voice of the UN Secretary General so that the sanctions achieve the intended objectives”, but “without this affecting other countries, other peoples, and, much less, jeopardizing risk food security on a global scale”, said Costa to the journalists who were waiting for him for the first impressions on the EU summit, in Brussels.

European Banking Union to be completed

We have continually insisted that it is in the calm moments that these problems must be dealt with, taking advantage of sunny days to take care of the roof”.
– Antonio Costa
Prime Minister, Portugal

With regard to new competitiveness strategies, in terms of industrial and energy autonomy, Costa considered that they are very important for the community’s future. Already questioned about a possible banking crisis, given the fall of banks in the US and Switzerland, the prime minister stressed that it is important to approve the guarantee of deposits in order to complete the European Banking Union.

“We have continually insisted that it is in the calm moments that these problems must be dealt with, taking advantage of sunny days to take care of the roof. It did not happen, but now that there are already many clouds in the air, it is convenient not to waste time and complete the Banking Union dossier”, said the Prime Minister.

This issue of banks will not fail to be addressed in the session on the euro zone, on Friday, with the presence of the president of the European Central Bank, Christine Lagarde.
