EURO 2020/2021: Switzerland – Turkey 3: 1

The Swiss footballers won in their final match of the A-group ME 2020 in Baku over Turkey 3: 1 and kept the chance to advance to the round of 16.

With four points, they finished in third place in the table, with a tie and a draw in a duel with Wales, a better score decided in favor of the opponent. The Turks did not get a single point at the championship and with the score of 1: 8 they took the last fourth place.

The Swiss laid the foundation for the victory in the first half hour of Sunday’s match, when Haris Seferovič and Xherdan Shaqiri advanced. The Turks cut in the 62nd minute after a shot by Irfan Kahveci, but six minutes later Shaqiri set the final score again.

The progress of the Swiss to the round of 16 will depend on the results in the other groups. The first two teams and the four best of the third places from the six basic groups advance to the elimination phase.

The Turks started the opening minutes actively and in the 4th minute they worked out a good opportunity, but Sommer performed an excellent intervention after Ayhan’s shot from behind the penalty area. On the contrary, Switzerland took the lead from its first chance. Zuber played Seferovič in the 6th minute with a shot from behind the defender to the right post surprised by Cakir. The Turks tried to answer immediately, and in the 16th minute Sommer stood out again when he neutralized Müldür’s attempt. Tufan was shot on another occasion. Again, you didn’t pay. With 26 minutes played, Shaqiri nearly put the visitors another one up as he broke through in the middle and fired from just outside the box, but his shot passed just over the bar. The same player could have added a third goal in two minutes when he rushed alone to the goal, but this time he lost to a Turkish goalkeeper. In the next minutes, a quick match continued with many opportunities. Sommer kept the net, but he deflected another dangerous shot by Müldür, and in the 43rd minute he succeeded against the Turkish winger in the third.

Offensive football continued even after the change of sides. With 52 minutes played, Embolo nearly put the visitors another one up as he broke through in the middle and fired from just outside the box, but his shot passed just over the bar. Then came another chance for the Swiss, this time Embolo passed to Shaqiri, but he burned. After an hour of play, even Seferovič did not succeed against the Turkish goalkeeper. The Turks managed to equalize in the 62nd minute, when he pushed himself with a nice shot by Kahveci. However, the Swiss response came six minutes later, Shaqiri scored the second goal of the match. With 77 minutes played, the visitors could have drawn level after Xhakova came through the middle, but his kick went wide. In the end, the Swiss guarded the lead and still hope to advance from third place in the group.
