Several countries have already announced that the population will be offered a fourth dose of the vaccine. However, the European Medicines Agency (EMA) warns that a strategy of maintenance doses every four months poses a potential risk of overloading the human immune system.
“If we follow the strategy of vaccinating, say, every four months, there could be potential problems with the immune response, and it might not be as good as we’d like.
Therefore, we must be careful not to overload the immune system with re-immunization, ”says Marco Cavalier, ESZ Vaccination Strategy Manager.
He added that even if several maintenance doses turned out to be needed, they should be vaccinated at longer intervals, like annual flu vaccines, rather than every few months.
