The latest edition of Codemasters’ annual Formula 1 series, F1 22, is the first edition to support VR on PC. However, PlayStation users hoping for the same support for their console will need to adjust their expectations.
In an exclusive interview with TechRadar, Lee Mather, Senior Creative Director, revealed that Codemasters “has no plans at this time” to add VR support to both the PlayStation VR and the unreleased PSVR 2.
“We’ve been researching VR for a while and we want to bring it to our F1 game without compromise,” Mather said. “We’re working with a team that has worked on other Codemasters titles. It has taken several years to get us to this place and we are confident that we can provide a premium playing experience.”
The release of F1 22 is scheduled for July 1 on the PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, and PC. During the game’s official reveal in April, Codemasters announced that only PC players will be able to race in VR upon release. However, it was not clear until this point whether the developer had plans to provide PlayStation VR users with this feature as well.
We now know that console players may have to wait until F1 2023 to get this gaming experience.
The current list of VR headsets supported by F1 2022 on PC includes:
The option to play in VR on PC is available in all F1 22 modes. If you want, you can also race against players who don’t play with a VR set.
Codemasters has also added several features to ensure that racing over 200mph in VR is as realistic as possible. The game uses binaural audio to simulate the thrill of 3D racing sounds. Also, raindrops and dirt accumulate on the player’s virtual visor.
The playing experience is less nauseating than in real life. “Because of the speed and intensity of a moving F1 car, we have to make sure that significant effects are not too strong,” Mather tells us. “We don’t want players to get sick.”
Introducing the new F1 era
PlayStation VR users are undoubtedly disappointed that there is no support for the console for the time being. Still, plenty has been added in F1 22 to get excited about.
In addition to a co-op multiplayer mode and the usual driver and team updates, the latest track has also been added: Miami International Autodrome. You can view it below:
F1 22 also introduces a new adaptive AI system for ”less experienced players”. It adjusts the pace of the AI cars depending on your performance on the track. If you’ve never played an F1 game, we can promise you this is a great feature.
Furthermore, Codemasters has also added a hub that can be personalized called F1 Life. Players can collect supercars, clothing and accessories in it (think of it as a racing sim version of the luxury apartment in GTA V). Both Formula 2 and My Team modes return and come with their own suite of upgrades.
F1 22 is available for preorder now on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S and PC and will be released on July 1, 2022.
