The effort Facebook is doing with this project is enormous. It's not just a small sideline in the business of one of the largest technology companies in the world, but a strategic move. "We also want to be a trading platform in the future," said Paulette Rowe, responsible for Facebook's global payments business, at a financial conference in Amsterdam in early June. "We are looking for ways in which as many of our users as possible can send money to each other." In April, Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg himself proclaimed: "Payments will become a really important part of our business."
