The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) will assume jurisdiction over the investigation into the murder of a Manatí municipal policeman who died in the early hours of Saturday in the middle of an attempt to "carjack" in Vega Baja.
The spokesman of the FBI in Puerto Rico, Luis Rivera Santana, indicated today that they opened an investigation this morning to find those responsible for the event and request cooperation from citizens.
The agent Jesús Marrero Martínez, The 37-year-old was on duty and prevented two assailants from stealing a vehicle outside Bar La Taberna, on the PR-686 road in the Puerto Nuevo neighborhood of Vega Baja, the Uniformada reported.
According to the police report, there was an exchange of gunfire between the police and the assailants. Marrero Martínez was hit by a bullet in the back and right arm that caused his death in the act.
One of the assailants, identified as José Edgardo Berríos Colón, of 21 years and resident in Morovis, was wounded of bullet in the face and the chest and also he died in the place of the facts.
The FBI's Violent Crimes Squad and the FBI's Ponce Regional Office will investigate together with the Homicide Division of the Criminal Investigation Corps (CIC) of Vega Baja.
